Japanese automaker Toyota is working on to introduce a new GR Corolla hot hatch that will compete against the likes of Volkswagen Golf GTI, Honda Civic Type R and Hyundai i30 N.
According to reports, the GR Corolla that is set to arrive by 2023 will employ the same G16E-GTS 1.6 liter turbocharged three-cylinder petrol engine which is already in use in the GR Yaris. The G16E-GTS is known as the world’s most powerful three-cylinder engine in a production car that produces up to 268 hp and churns out a staggering 370 Nm of torque. Just like the GR Yaris, the upcoming GR Corolla will reportedly be paired to a 6-speed manual transmission and a 4-wheel drive layout.
Last year, Toyota which is generally known for reliable, simple and to-the-purpose cars announced to enhance its image and consumer perception by launching a performance version of each of its core models. Now having already launched the GR Supra and GR Yaris, the performance oriented GR Corolla in Toyota’s line-up will help to improve the company’s reputation for providing adrenaline-rushed fun-to-drive cars.
