Proton to Launch its Second SUV- the X50 in Malaysia in 2020 1

Proton has confirmed that it will launch its second SUV in Malaysia this year, which will be the X50. Based on the Geely SX11 Binyue, the camouflaged test mules of Proton X50 were seen quite a few times testing in Malaysia and is well on course to be introduced towards the second half of 2020.

According to Proton CEO Li Chunrong, the X50 will arrive in local assembled form immediately, rather than being imported from China as with the X70. This is because the donor car is currently only built in China as a left-hand drive model, so it cannot be exported. However just like its bigger brother X70 (which is based on Geely Boyue), the Proton X50 will differ itself from the donor model with slight cosmetic differences. It will wear Proton’s signature infinite weave pattern up front and will have a slightly tweaked rear end.

Expected features will likely include panoramic sunroof, dual-zone climate control and a power-adjustable driver’s seat, plus a 10.25-inch infotainment touchscreen running on the Geely Key User Interface (GKUI) and incorporating “Hi Proton” voice command system.

There are no words on the engines yet however in China, the SX11 Binyue is available with a choice of two turbocharged, direct-injection 3-cylinder petrol engines. The first is 1.5 liter unit co-developed by Geely and Volvo which produces 174 hp and 255 Nm and is paired to a 7-speed dual-clutch gearbox. The second engine is a smaller 1.0 liter unit with 134 hp and 205 Nm and is available only with a 6-speed manual transmission.

Speculative renderings of Proton X50

Proton is in process of setting up its assembly plant in Pakistan and has already hinted the launch of local assembled X70 SUV as well as the Saga sedan while according to Proton CEO the company also have plans to assemble several Proton models down the line in Pakistan.
