BYD Launches the Impressive Song Max MPV

Chinese auto manufacturers are rapidly hiring reputable European designers which is the very reason why most Chinese auto companies are rolling out sensational designs today, unlike the ones from previous decade that always cried out loud as ‘copied design’.

Peter Horbury, the former design head of Volvo is now heading Geely as Senior Vice President of Design, thanks to Geely’s acquisition of Volvo. In addition, former BMW design director Chris Bangle, has joined Changan Automobiles, former Mercedes-Benz designer Peter Arcadipane has joined BAIC Group (Beijing Auto Industry Company), while former Porsche designer Hakan Saracoglu has joined Chery Automobiles.

The Song Max mid-sized MPV is the first production vehicle designed by Wolfgang Egger. The front-end design is called “Dragon Face” which is BYD’s new signature design and will be carried on every BYD model.

The Song Max is probably one of the best looking Chinese cars produced recently. It carries a 1.5 liter turbocharged engine with 156 hp and 240 Nm, mated to either a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed DCT gearbox. BYD will reportedly add a 2.0 liter naturally aspirated and a 1.5 liter turbo hybrid to the lineup in the near future.

The interior gets a 12.8 inch touchscreen, multi-function steering wheel, electric parking brakes, electrically adjustable front seats, panoramic sunroof and three row seating (5+2). The Song Max is priced from 79,900 yuan (PKR 12.55 lac) and goes as high as 119,900 yuan (PKR 18.83 lac) for the fully loaded version.
