2019 Toyota Corolla Spied Testing in Cold Weather

Toyota is out testing what’s destined to be the 12th generation of the Corolla. The vehicle is still at the testing phase, which means most of what you see now, will be changed by the time the car debuts. The 12th gen Corolla is expected to make its global debut in late 2018 or early 2019.

The new model will be a true redesign, and will be based on Toyota’s new TNGA modular platform which already features in the latest Prius, Camry as well as the new C-HR. Toyota says that the modular TNGA platform helps reduce manpower for the vehicle development by 20 percent.

TNGA vehicle platforms are designed to achieve a low vehicle center-of-gravity, which will give drivers a more engaging driving position and more precise and responsive handling, without compromising ride or comfort. TNGA promotes more responsive handling by increasing vehicle body rigidity, which can be seen in the new Prius, which benefits from a 60 per cent more rigid body shell.

Besides making stylish designs and lower hoods, Toyota says the TNGA platforms and designs have prioritized the highest active and passive safety standards. One can expect the new Corolla to have all these benefits.

It’s too early to say anything about the available powertrains but a series of inline-4s and perhaps a hybrid option is expected. Toyota has announced new 8- and 10-speed automatic transmissions that will be coming to replace a number of 6-speed and CVT units it currently uses, though it’s not clear if these will make it into the new Corolla.

It is also reported that BMW may supply engines for the 12th generation Toyota Corolla, as part of the BMW-Toyota technical partnership. The BMW-made engines are expected to be offered in top variants, which could help boost the Corolla’s appeal in the mass market, given BMW’s prowess in engine development.

Toyota & BMW are already working together on developing an all-new sports car, which would become both the new Supra and the replacement for the Z4 (rumored to be called as Z5).
