Based on the CLAR (CLuster ARchitecture) rear-wheel drive platform of the 2016 BMW 7 Series, the 2017 5 Series is expected to be up to 100 kg lighter than its predecessor. The exterior is a design evolution over the outgoing model with a larger kidney grille connecting the headlight clusters, sporty bumpers with larger airdams, a single crease running the width of the sedan and LED taillights with a more rounded design.

Inside, the 2017 BMW 5 Series borrows a bit of inspiration from the new 7 Series. A slimmer steering wheel, a fully-digital instrument cluster and a large iDrive monitor with gesture controls (probably) are the highlights of interior of the E Class-rival.

Under the hood, the 2017 BMW 5 Series is expected to offer petrol and diesel engines with displacements ranging between 2.0- to 4.4-litre, while a plug-in hybrid power-train is also expected. BMW is expected to offer 6-speed manual and 8-speed automatic transmissions with a conventional rear-wheel drive and optional xDrive all-wheel drive system.
