Toyota Launches Corolla 1.2 Liter Turbo in China

Toyota in China has launched the 1.2 liter four-cylinder direct injection turbocharged engine for the Corolla sedan. Developed by the FAW-Toyota joint venture, the Corolla uses the same 1.2 liter 8NR-FTS turbo unit that is offered with Toyota Auris.

Last year Toyota announced its plan to introduce a series of new, highly fuel-efficient engines, created using a number of combustion and loss-reduction technologies that had previously been reserved for hybrid engines.

The 1.2T uses advanced technologies that allow it to change from the Otto to the Atkinson cycle when running under low loads, vertical vortex high tumble air flow intake ports, an exhaust manifold integrated in the cylinder head and advanced heat management measures. Furthermore, an upgraded VVT-iW (Variable Valve Timing – intelligent Wide) system allows even more valve timing flexibility.

The 1.2T also adds a direct injection system and a water-cooled turbo and heat exchanger. The combination of these technologies results in outstanding performance and efficiency.  With a displacement of just 1,197cc, the engine delivers 114bhp (85kW) and constant torque of 185Nm between 1,500 and 4,000rpm.

Automakers these days are working hard towards offering low displacement yet powerful turbocharged engines rather than naturally aspirated units. The low displacement of engine also has its positive effect on vehicle taxation. Toyota will offer the 1.2T engine in the upcoming facelift Corolla range in various markets across the globe.

Price of the 1.2T Corolla in China starts from 109,800 yuan (PKR 17.0 lac) for the base 1.2T GL trim to up to 143,800 (PKR 22.3 lac) for the fully loaded 1.2T GLX-i CVT trim.
